About this project

Our Story

We believe that you can have more with less. And that’s why we designed the Versalette — a multifunctional piece that can be worn over 15 different ways. Made in the USA with 100 percent recycled fabric, the Versalette proves that we can have more options with less clothes in our wardrobe.

The Versalette can be worn as a skirt, dress, hood, scarf, purse, poncho & more — and is essential for travelers and women looking to minimize their wardrobes, reduce their footprint, and still have creativity with their clothing options.

We design for women like us — travelers, minimalists, adventurers and conscientious consumers. We are inspired by the idea that every mindful purchase makes a big difference.

Your Contribution

With the help of Kickstarter and people like you, we’ll be able to start producing the Versalette here in the USA. Our signature piece is the first of an entire line that focuses on ultra-versatile and sustainably-designed women’s wear. Your support means we can turn the Versalette into a reality, start selling on our website, and ship our design to boutiques around the country!

The Rewards

We’ve got some sweet rewards for our supporters, and we hope you’ll give us the opportunity to return the generosity to you. We can’t do this without you, so if you jive with our mission, please help us by sharing and spreading the word.

(More info about how these rewards are printed and made in the Rewards column on the right.)

All of these rewards make for great holiday presents! They’re literally the gifts that keep on giving…

Because we’ll still be chugging along in production for the entire month of January, we’ll personally send you an e-card (saves paper!) to give to your friends and family to let them know they’ll be receiving a gift from you and {r}evolution apparel for the holidays.

So, you have one less gift to wrap, and who doesn’t love getting presents in March?

Why We Design

We are adventurers by nature, driven by a need to see, touch, taste and feel.

Traveling through developing countries with just a pack on our backs has forced us to think about needs. Real needs.

When surrounded by poverty our lavish lives back home seem less and less fulfilling. The things in our cluttered apartments become meaningless. It’s just us and our backpacks in a place that no longer seems a world away. Life becomes something else — and it has nothing to do with buying the latest iPhone or a new pair of jeans.

It has become more about the effects of pesticides for cotton crops and the hardships of exploitative factory work. All so that the rest of us can consume. And throw out. And consume again. Over and over, until we realize that things will never truly fulfill us.

We have been fortunate to experience countries so rich in culture, so full of life, that we can’t seem to shake one repeating thought:

We don’t need all of that.

Even more, we can’t reason why the developing world should bear the brunt of our consumption. Environmentally. Economically. Personally.

And that’s how our {r}evolution began. The Versalette was designed to allow minimalists and travelers (like us) to live with less — while also having the confidence that their purchase supports locally-made and recycled fabrics.

We want to create clothes that are good for the world, on every level. The Versalette is the first step, so we thank you in advance for your help!

Kristin & Shannon

And lastly, visit our brand new website to see the entire look, explanation of production, and more on who we are:

*A Note on Sizing* – ONE SIZE FITS MOST

Since this piece is pretty unusual and can’t be “sized” we encourage everyone to look carefully at dimensions above and take a measurement if you’re in question.

The hips are the most vivacious (and awesome) part of a woman’s body. Standard US sizing goes like this:

Misses Size 6 – 32.5” hips
Misses Size 18 – 42” hips
The Versalette – 48” across hips, bust, thighs

Measuring the circumference of the arms is also important.
Typically this is what women measure:
Misses Size 6 – 9.75”
Misses Size 18 – 12”
The Versalette – 16”

If you’d like a looser fit, be sure to measure yourself and maybe a few of your favorite tee’s. The Versalette was designed to fit most, but we’ve all got different bodies and all prefer different fits. So, take a close look at our measurements – and if you do receive your Versalette and are unhappy with the size, we will absolutely return your Kickstarter donation in full.

If you need a more snug fit, the Versalette is designed to make those adjustments, too. The armhole can be buttoned up for smaller arms, and the drawstrings allow for tightening where you need it.

*A Note to Our International Backers*

We’ve made some great friends overseas during our travels, and we want you guys to be a part of this, too! While we aren’t planning on selling the Versalette worldwide, we will absolutely ship our rewards to friends in other countries!

If we could, we’d ship for free. But we’re not quite there yet! So if you’re not located in the US, please add a shipping donation to your pledge.

$35 Pledge – add $4

$50 Pledge – add $6

$100 Pledge – add $6

$200 Pledge – add $8

Brand New Windowfarms- Vertical Food Gardens

A Food project in Brooklyn, NY by The Windowfarms Project

About this project

If we get $200,000 worth of orders by Dec 7, these gorgeous gardens will be produced in the USA. Please ask a friend to join you in windowfarming. It will help us create more fun, green jobs and a healthy planet.

Kickstarter link to support the project and contact the innovators

Windowfarms let you grow fresh vegetables at home by taking advantage of natural light and climate control indoors. The roots are bathed in nutrients from the sea, preventing food plants from getting root bound (as they do in traditional soil filled containers). You get healthier roots, and fresher, more nutritious vegetables without dirt in small spaces.

By bringing edible gardens into living rooms and kitchens, you learn about where your food comes from while eating the freshest produce available.

We are offering One-Column Windowfarms at a special reduced price to help us meet our production minimums. Normally, our One-Column Windowfarms will cost $119.95, but if you buy on Kickstarter now to help us get started, you will get it for just $99 (plus shipping and handling).

The new Windowfarms systems are made from environmentally friendly plastic and wire. The new design just snaps together, so you can get right to growing. As you can see below, they can either hang from two hooks above your window (left) or stand on their metal base or your sill or floor (right).  Over time, we will come out with many more versions but we love this one so much we are already calling it “the Classic.”

This website is a little different. Here on Kickstarter you can “preorder” a windowfarm. It lets you help us, a small business with a powerful social mission, pay the startup costs of this new manufacturing project. When you select a reward from the options on the right, you are ordering something that is not made yet. Your credit card will be charged for it on Dec 7, once everyone’s orders are in. Then we will take your order along with everyone else’s order and money to the manufacturer and they will make all of them!  Yours will ship to you or your giftee in March.  You will be in the first batch and you will see that that buys you a lot of “street cred” in our community.

HAVE QUESTIONS? Read our Frequently Asked Questions at the bottom of the page in blue.

You don’t have to have a green thumb because windowfarms come with a built in social network online. There are already 22,000 of us around the world who are growing in water bottle windowfarms and we are online! You always have someone to talk to about your plants to share your growing experiences with at Conversations center on identifying the “micro-climate” of your windows and finding a good match amongst the huge varieties of herbs, greens, vegetables, fruits, and medicinals available.  It’s like the Facebook game, Farmville, but tastier!

If you think you want to start easy. Choose a reward that includes nutrients and baby plant delivery of our favorite, well-tested varieties to ensure that you start off with good baby plants and your Windowfarms are always producing fresh herbs, greens, and other edibles.

Holiday Gifts

Our new Windowfarms will not be ready to ship by the holidays, but your giftee’s Windowfarming experience will start on Dec 24. If you tell us you are pre-ordering as a gift, we will send a personalized welcome-to-the community card to your loved one before December 24. The card will include a link to a personalized webpage already set up for his/her windowfarm. Your giftee will be able to begin customizing the page and learning about his/her window’s microclimate. He/she will go through Windowfarms 101 by video. At that point, he can select the plants he wants and start meeting other windowfarmers. By the time the windowfarm arrives, your loved one will be ready to grow for real!!

One-Column Classic Windowfarm- $99 + shipping/handling (US & Canada) comes with:

International version does not include timer & pump but does include shipping (see FAQs below)

Four-Column Classic Windowfarm- $269 + shipping/handling comes with one special, slightly larger air pump that runs all four columns and one timer. All other parts come with 4X the quantity.

Baby plant and nutrient rewards come at several reward levels. Some are for one shipment, others are for multiple quarterly shipments. Each shipment includes:

- Organic and natural sea-derived nutrients from Botanicare’s Organicare line, enough to last for one or two crops (about 4 months) and a measuring dropper.

- Disposable water testing strips.

- Baby plants, aka “seedlings,” raised by our chef-turned-hydroponic farmer partner, Greg Graft of Grateful Greens. You will have an opportunity to select your plant mix from a variety of fine herbs and salad greens after the campaign closes. Common varieties include: Genovese Basil, a peppery watercress, perfect-caesar romaine, red leaf lettuce, tangy red-veined sorrel, lolla rosa lettuce, arugula, rosemary, thyme, oregano, stevia, mint and much more. We are always trying new varieties.  Seedlings are about 3-4″ tall and their roots are grown in hydroponic root cubes. You just nestle them into the clay pellets and turn your pump timer on! You can harvest from the same plant for 2-4 months depending on the variety.

Time: Windowfarms will ship in March. Bags will ship in January.

One-column Windowfarm: Please add $15 within the continental US, $19 for Canada, Hawaii, and Alaska. International shipping included in the International Reward.

Four-column Windowfarm: Please add $35 within the continental US, $42 for Canada, Hawaii, and Alaska. Not available internationally.

Baby plants and nutrients cannot be shipped internationally because of customs restrictions.  Please see below for all international frequently asked questions.

The pictures of the Windowfarms systems are of prototypes. Small changes to improve your experience will most definitely occur before you receive your Windowfarm! Please contact us if you have questions.

Brighten 1.5 Billion lives with $1

WAKAWAKA Solar Lamp – A solar LED lamp with a story

High-Tech Low Cost patented state of the art solar solution, giving you 16 hrs reading light.
A sustainable & sensible Adventure!

Haarlem, the Netherlands –In the beginning there was light for all – and a little later there was electric light for, well, only some of us. But 1.5 billion people still live in darkness. Dutch startup Off-Grid Solutions makes an end to developing countries’ killing kerosene dependency. They want their high-tech low-cost WakaWaka solar LED lamp to light up Africa ‘like a Christmas tree’.

Via, the general public is now enthusiastically pre-ordering WakaWaka´s for 35 dollars each. The minimal support to contribute to their mission is one dollar. Thanks to this innovative way of crowdfunding, WakaWaka grows at the speed of light. And with it, the dream of providing all Africans with a sustainable light solution becomes more real by the minute.

1.5 billion people live off-grid. They depend on kerosene fuel for their basic lighting needs.
Annually millions of children suffer severe burns from accidents with kerosene lamps. The toxic fumes cause even more health problems. World Bank reports that each day 780 million women and children inhale the equivalent of two packs of cigarettes as a result of indoor air pollution.

Fuels for lighting take up to 20% of the income of poor people, who try to survive on less than $2 a day. This way, the poor stay poor. But there is light at the end of the tunnel: the WakaWaka light.

The WakaWaka (‘Shine Bright’ in Swahili) solar lamp uses the latest in patented solar technology developed by Intivation, allowing for superior charging in any weather conditions.
Each day of free solar charging gives 16 hours of decent reading light. It has different light intensities and fits on a bottle, stimulating recycling and opening up opportunities for joint promotions. Innovative distribution methods will reach even the most remote rural areas. Various accessories (cell phone chargers, radios, etc.) are already in development, which will further enhance livelihood and help people get out of poverty.

Co-founder Camille van Gestel: ‘I genuinely believe that if you can make a difference, you must. I have never done anything with so much passion. The support and inquiries we are receiving for WakaWaka from all over the world are as stimulating as they are heartwarming. We are doing the right thing.’

Let’s hope this new bright light spreads fast, for all and everybody. LED there be light.

Startup Apparel Company Launches Revolutionary Piece

Nov. 17, 2011 – Austin, TX & Denver, CO

{r}evolution apparel introduces its signature piece, the Versalette — a multi-functional garment that can be worn over 15 different ways. It’s made in the USA with 100 percent recycled materials.

The boot-strapped clothing company was started by entrepreneurs, Kristin Glenn (25) of Denver, CO and Shannon Whitehead (26) of Austin, TX, in September 2010. The idea for a minimalist, travel clothing line was sparked after backpacking around the world as recent post-grads.

This is their first piece brought to market through the crowd-funding site The company plans to raise capital through pre-sales of the Versalette and will begin production pending the success of the campaign. The goal is to raise $20,000 by Dec. 22.

Glenn, a business major at Tulane University, and Whitehead, a journalism major at the University of Florida, met in Australia in 2008 while trying to escape corporate America. They reconnected on Facebook in 2010 and made it their mission to create a business that would improve the exploitative fashion industry.

Glenn and Whitehead hope to “revolutionize fashion” with the Versalette, and later, the 10 other ultra-functional pieces of their line. The company was founded on the premise of “doing more with less” by designing versatile apparel, promoting sustainable production methods, and encouraging others to make mindful purchases.

After visiting organic cotton farms in Nicaragua, eco-friendly factories in North Carolina, and sourcing fabric samples from all over the world, they have found an American manufacturer that shares a similar mission and set of values.

Pre-sales of the Versalette are available on
